My senior capstone project is titled Meditations. In this project, I want to cultivate a sense of calm and quiet. Meditation and reflection are cherished aspects of my life, used to weather times of high stress and to enhance sweet times with friends and family. To me, these moments of solace are active rather than passive, a conscious effort in pursuit of calm and mental peace. Throughout the making of this project, I embodied this active relaxation through repetitive and often obsessive gestures and actions. Knot tying, weaving, binding, and wrapping exemplify the meditative process. My goal is to develop these processes and make work that would evoke tactile, raw, monochromatic, gridded, and juxtaposed elements to engage the viewer. Early in the conceptualization process, I knew I wanted to work using the minimalist vocabulary and toolkit, taking inspiration from minimalist artists working in the 70s, 80s, and 90s. Beyond this conceptual collection process, I reached a point where I needed to put aside the artists and simply begin with my own experiments and models. I focused on this process of play and experimentation, letting the materials and processes inspire me along the way. I became fascinated with the texture and satisfying qualities of my materials, allowing myself to simply explore and play.
